1.2.7.160 Student Start-up Scholarship - Description

From 1 July 2017, the student start-up scholarship is no longer available. Instead, higher education students receiving YA (student), Austudy and ABSTUDY living allowance may be eligible for an SSL.

Background

The objective of the student start-up scholarship was to provide an increase in participation in higher education by students from low socio-economic status (SES) backgrounds by providing essential assistance to university students for the upfront cost of text books and specialised equipment.

From 1 January 2016, the student start-up scholarship was replaced by the SSL (1.2.7.165) for new student payment recipients undertaking higher education. People who had received a student start-up scholarship prior to 1 January 2016 and had remained in continuous receipt of student payments remained eligible for the student start-up scholarship until 1 July 2017 or coming off student payments, whichever occurred first.
