The rent assistance (RA) changes announced in the 1995/96 Budget take effect from 20 March 1996. In addition to the cost of living increase, all rent thresholds increased by an extra $5.00 a fortnight, as too the maximum rates of RA for families with children. In addition, a strategy has been introduced to phase out the RA savings provisions more quickly.

Other changes permit RA to be paid to people 'in a care situation'.

New policy direction is given in relation to RA during certain periods of temporary accommodation, and outline treatment of housing assistance in lieu of cash maintenance.
