1.2.7.140 Youth disability supplement (YDS) - description
Objective
The YDS is an income supplement paid to young people with disability recognising additional costs associated with having a physical, intellectual or psychiatric disability.
Qualification
The YDS is payable to DSP recipients aged under 21 years without children. The YDS is payable with DSP.
The rate of a person on DSP who is less than 21 years cannot exceed the rate of a DSP recipient who is 21 years or over.
The YDS is also payable to:
- YA recipients under 22 years with an assessed partial capacity to work (1.1.P.65), and
- recipients of the ABSTUDY living allowance aged under 22 years assessed as having a partial capacity to work.
Note: YDS applies when a YA or ABSTUDY living allowance recipient has been assessed by a health or allied health professional as having a partial capacity to work. For YA or ABSTUDY living allowance recipients, YDS is payable from the date the assessment is accepted by the Secretary (subject to waiting periods (3.1.2)).
The rate payable to a person on YA or ABSTUDY who is aged 21 years or younger cannot exceed the rate payable to those 22 years or over (JSP rates (5.1.1.10)).
Note: For single recipients with an assessed partial capacity to work of 0 to 14 hours per week, the equivalent common benefit rate may be the JSP rate extended to single recipients with a partial capacity to work of 0 to 14 hours per week.

How is YDS paid
YDS is paid fortnightly.
Indexation
The YDS is indexed annually in line with CPI increases.
