Definition

Section 29(1) of the Migration Act 1958 specifies that a non-Australian citizen may be granted 'permission, to be known as a visa, to do either or both of the following:

  • (a) travel to and enter Australia;
  • (b) remain in Australia.'

The visa granted may be a permanent visa or a temporary visa (9.1.2).
