What to do

The following table outlines the information to be provided to the individual (1.1.A.72) by Centrelink depending on the type of claim lodged.

If the claim is a … for … then …
bereavement claim (1.1.B.20) a bereavement period that falls wholly within an income year, and the claim is lodged after the end of the following income year
  • advise the individual that the claim is not effective (1.1.E.10), and
  • they will never be able to receive payment for the bereavement period.
a bereavement period that falls wholly within an income year and the claim is lodged before the end of the following income year the claim may still be effective.
a bereavement period which spans 2 income years, and an amount for the part of the bereavement period falls in the earliest income year; and the claim is lodged after the end of the second income year
  • advise the individual that the claim is not effective, and
  • they will never be able to receive payment for the bereavement period.
a bereavement period which spans 2 income years, and an amount for the part of the bereavement period falls in the earliest income year; and the claim is lodged before the end of the second income year the claim may still be effective.
past period claim (1.1.P.60) that part of the past period that occurs before the start of the income year before the income year in which the claim is made the claim is not effective.
the part of the past period that occurs after the start of the income year before the income year in which the claim is made
  • the claim may still be effective. The claim may need to be accompanied by an instalment claim (1.1.I.100).
